Skinny models do not help sell products claim researchers

Recent research into advertising has found that skinny models are actually a turn off to the consumer in TV commercials and other forms of advertising. They found that images of super-thin models carry no edge in encouraging young women to buy and for the majority of adult women adverts showing skinny girls actually discouraged sales.

So-called ‘plus-size models’, on the other hand, actually encouraged them to buy. The study performed by psychologist Phillippa Diedrichs from the University of Queensland, Australia, created a series of ads for underwear, shampoo and a party dress. Each advert was made twice, once using a skinny size eight model and another featuring a size twelve woman.

When women aged between 18 and 25 saw the adverts they felt better - and more likely to buy - after viewing the images of the size twelve models.

Miss Diedrichs said: “For anything to change, research has to be convincing, not just to government and health researchers, but also to people in advertising who actually make the decisions. Often people make the argument that thinness sells, and that’s why they use thin models.”

“But we can change the images we see and still sell products but also make people feel better about themselves.” The soap brand Dove has based its image on a campaign using “real women” and highlighting how much imagery in advertising is manipulated.

There have been concerted campaigns against the ultra-thin “size zero” with fashion weeks in Madrid and Milan banning models from the catwalk that were of a weight deemed unhealthy by the Body Mass Index measure.

Best Albums of 2008

Here is a list of some of the top music albums of 2008, whether you agree or disagree, lists are very much a part of a new year and reflecting on the year which has just past. So have a browse through the list and feel free to leave your own reflections, comments and opinions of the albums!

 Alphabeat - This is Alphabeat

With influences drawn largely from the golden era of 1980s pop (ie. before Stock, Aitken, and Waterman made it rubbish), this  Danish combo’s debut album is a selection of fun from start to finish. Track eight though, (Rubberboots) sticks out like a sore t  thumb in its inexplicable awfulness but, if anything, it serves only to highlight the embarrassment of riches on show elsewhere.

The Raconteaurs - Consolers of the Lonely

It’s rare that a band’s second album blows the socks off its predecessor but Consolers Of The Lonely did exactly that.  While Broken Boy Soldiers certainly had its moments, it seemed as though Jack White and Brendon Benson’s respective talents  were too unique ever to blend convincingly.

 Duffy - Rockferry

Most people’s first exposure to Duffy came with the retro R&B of Mercy, which lit up the charts in February. Great though that    track is, the real gems were to be had on her debut album. At its best (Warwick Avenue, Syrup and Honey, Distant Dreamer),  Rockferry revealed a neo-soul talent every bit as impressive as Amy Winehouse.

 Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree

“Getting it together in the country” is an old hippie cliche which rarely has the desired effect (see Withnail And I). Alison    Goldfrapp and Will Gregory pulled it off here though, retreating from the disco stylings of their previous few albums and    channeling the bucolic spirit of Kate Bush.

Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night

With the arrival of this, their fourth album in five years, Kings of Leon revealed not only a work ethic absent in most of the  peers, but also their evolution from indie darlings to the country’s favourite stadium rock band.

 Portishead - Third

The way this band has evolved is stunning, their net has been cast far wider for this album and brings in an array of influences,  everything from post-rock and sea shanties to industrial and techno. Utterly sublime, with only the odd song harping back to the  days of ‘traditional’ Portishead.

 Roots Manuva

As schizophrenic as it is brilliant, Slime And Reason is the sound of a man unable to reconcile macho swagger with tortured soul-  searching. Mr Manuva’s dilemma is our gain though. Here he proves once again that he’s UK hip-hop’s finest.

You know when you’ve been Winehouse’d

Amy Winehouse can’t help but destroy everything she gets close too, as an extremely worse for wear Sadie Frost staggered out of the ‘Back to Black’ singers house, after a short 90 minute party.

The fashion designer/actress entered Amy’s house at midnight on Monday looking glamorous with her on-off boyfriend Kristian Marr.

When she left Sadie, 43, looked a mess, with her dress undone and her underwear on display as she piled in to a taxi.

A source said: “The zip of her dress wasn’t done up properly and her jacket was tucked into the back of it. She was in a real state.

“Oddly, she left clutching a box full of junk, which had ‘make-up/skin care bits’ written on the top.

“When they came to leave, they couldn’t open the front door.

“Amy said she had lost the key after locking it, so there was a bit of a panic as they tried to work out how they were going to get out.”

Sadie is apparently Tee Total, but as thins proves when you go to the Winehouse, don’t expect to come off well.

The mother-of-four is a member of the infamous Primrose Hill set - which also includes supermodel Kate Moss, Rhys Ifans and British actress Davinia Taylor.

X Factor Contestant Rachel Hylton hasn’t dumped Dannii!

Recent rumours in the press have lead the public to believe that contestant Rachel Hylton has dumped her mentor Dannii, but these rumours have been wrong and it has been confirmed that Rachel has not “dumped” her mentor Dannii Minogue and the pair have actually been working closely together all week. Rachel found herself in the bottom last week and this has taken a big blow to her confidence and she is worried this will affect her next performance, Rachel has requested to Dannii that she wants to have more of a say in the song choice and the overall style of her next performance but this hasn’t been a problem and she claims she is still part of Team Minogue!

Rachel Hylton has said to ITV, “Dannii and I talked yesterday and I don’t have anything against Dannii at all and she is still very much my mentor and I respect her opinions, all I want is a little more control over my performance and styling, which she is allowing me to have. But I am a fully fledged member of Team Minogue.”

Dannii Minogue’s comments on the rumours were “Rachel and I have not fallen out and there has never been any discussions that she wishes to leave Team Minogue. I have, as always, spent lots of one on one time with Rachel this week and have even organised a personal shopping trip so she feels more confident about her look. Rachel is a raw talent. She may be the Robbie Williams of The X Factor, but I back her 100% and want her to be happy. As with all three of my amazing contestants, they are my main priority.”

Scarlett Johansson:I’m not Woody Allen’s Muse

scarlett_johansson_1011

Scarlett Johansson has denied that she is film director Woody Allen’s muse. The stunning actress has played down recent claims that she inspires the director to make films; even though she’s starred in his last three.

She said: “I’m not his muse. Every single junket that we’ve done so far, we always get the muse thing and we always say, ‘no’, it’s not that way.

“Woody and I both appreciate how wonderful it is to work with your friends, and it’s fun and we always have a great time when we do it, we entertain each other, we understand each other and we poke each other.”

The 23-year-old stars in Allen’s upcoming ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ after previously featuring in 2005’s ‘Match point’ and ‘Scoop’ in 2006.

Wood said recently that he was “totally captivated” by the blond bombshell when he first met her, but thought she was too young for the role in ‘Match Point’

She said: “She was only 19 years old at the time. But I was in a hole, I had to get somebody quickly, and I knew that Scarlett was a great actress and a beauty.

“I hired her and became totally captivated by her. I thought she could simply do anything. She was not only beautiful but also bright, amusing, charming, and gifted.”

X Factor reject Rachel Hylton breaks down

Rachel Hylton broke down in tears as she hit out at negative media coverage for cutting short her X Factor experience. The 26-year-old soul singer said she felt “numb” about being kicked off Saturday night’s show after she lost out in a sing-off with boyband JLS.

Rachel, a former drug addict, said: “I really think it didn’t matter about my performance. Bottom line is I feel I’ve been judged on my past the whole way through this competition. I wasn’t given a chance.”

The mother-of-five, from London, burst into tears as she blamed the media for victimising her by digging up her criminal past, which had led to three of her children being taken into care.

She said: “I’ve been given a lot of negative press coverage. I just feel it was really unfair. I know I’ve taken drugs, I know I’ve committed crimes and I am sorry.”

“I didn’t mean to do them things. I’ve lost three kids and I’m nearly 27,” she added, sobbing.

“I’m sorry to cry, but I’ve got to live with that every single day of my life. My oldest son is 13 and I don’t even know what his favourite colour is, that’s embarassing. It’s not something I’m proud of.”

Jamie Spears Has Baby Girl

Jamie Spears – the sister of head shaving nut-bar Britney – has become a mother for the first time at the age of 17.

7lb 11oz Maddie Briann came in to the world yesterday morning at the Mississippi Regional Medical centre.

Mother and baby are reportedly doing well after Jamie’s natural delivery, which was witnessed by her mother Lynne and her fiancée Casey Aldridge – Britney sat patiently outside.

One source claimed: “Just the family was there. Everyone is healthy and happy. Maddie is gorgeous.”

Casey, 19, was said to be terrified of holding his baby for the first time in-case he dropped her, but probably not as terrified as the baby who has been born in to one hell of a crazy family.

Jamie’s friend’s say the actress will make a fantastic mother. One friend said: “We’re so excited for her. She’ll be a great mom. She’ll be awesome. She was so excited about having this child. She was looking forward to it so much.”

Britney flew to Kenwood, Louisiana, from her home in Hollywood home to be with her sister.

Jamie announced she was pregnant last December admitting that it was a shock but she was looking forward to being a mother.

Amy Winehouse is back in hospital

Amy Winehouse was admitted to the London Clinic in Harley Street after falling ill on Sunday, and after spending a few days there under the watchful eyes of doctors she is still there this evening.

Her publicist has spoken out and said that Amy was sick because of the combination of medication she is taking to battle her drug addiction and had had a bad reaction to the medication he also added that the singer arrived at the hospital in a car, not an ambulance as had been claimed.

The 25-year-old missed her husband’s court appearance on Monday because of the illness, Blake who is 26 was in court in a failed attempt to have his 27 month sentence for grievous bodily harm and perverting the cause of justice cut. Both Amy and Blake both have well-reported drug problems.

In January this year, footage obtained by The Sun newspaper appeared to show Winehouse inhaling fumes from a crack pipe, Amy then entered a rehab clinic days after the video was released.

Dannii Minogue Has Said She Will Be Back

The X Factor judge Dannii Minogue said she will be back for next year’s show, despite rumours saying she is going to be sacked from the show and replaced by Robbie Williams

The 37-year-old has said: “The producers and Simon tell me I am returning, so that’s all I believe. So unless I hear differently, then I’ll be back.”

Despite her fall-out with judge Louis Walsh, which saw her in tears live throughout one show, Dannii is keen to keep the current line-up, as she believes that the panel is strong and works well with Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole.

“We have different opinions - it’s very important.” Dannii says.

The 37-year-old is taking her rugby player boyfriend Kris Smith home to Australia to meet her parents this Christmas - ”I can’t wait to show Kris around Australia. I’m so excited. Initially he was coming for a two-week break, but who knows, he might just take one long holiday and stay with me the whole time!”

Cheryl who is a judge alongside Dannii on the show has put previous marriage troubles with footballer husband Ashley Cole, after reports he was unfaithful, behind her this Christmas.

Cheryl has said: “I’m a real Christmas person. It’s such a family time and I love getting festive. I’d like to fill stockings with romantic and thoughtful presents for Ashley!

Heather Mills Please Leave Us Alone

Absolute nut-case and (luckily for him now) Sir Paul McCartney’s ex Heather Mills is writing a lifestyle manual.

The 64 page book is ‘cleverly’ titled Get Healthy With Heather and will offer health tips on how to combat stress.

The 40-year-old former model gives some never heard-exclusive advice to the world: The seasons affect people’s mood. SHOCK HORROR.

‘Spring is in the air and this is a time for change, regeneration and new beginnings,’ writes Heather.

‘We all know sometimes that life’s problems can be overwhelming so it’s really important we learn to relax properly and iron out those everyday stresses and strains.

‘I feel invigorated by spring; the colours of nature seem brighter, re-energised by the extra warmth and light.’

The best thing for combating stress I think would to be to not EVER read/lay eyes on this poor excuse for a help book, as it comes from a self-absorbed wretch of a woman who has no shame and will do anything to make a quick buck. Heather, didn’t you get enough already?
